FUTURE FACULTY TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS

Preparing doctoral students
to teach where the teaching jobs are: An opportunity to gain significant
independent but mentored teaching experience in new academic environments
PROGRAM FEATURES
- Placement for the academic
year or for one semester at a non-residential campus of Indiana University:
IUPUI (Indianapolis); IUPU Columbus; IU East (Richmond); IPFW (Fort
Wayne); IU Kokomo; IU Northwest (Gary); IU South Bend; IU Southeast
(New Albany). Opportunities may also be available for placement at independent
colleges in Indiana.
- Stipend: $8,000 per semester
- Teaching load: Two courses
per semester
- Required preliminary three-day
intensive FACET Institute on teaching in different academic environments
- Faculty mentor at the host
campus
- Participation in faculty life
at the host campus
- Residency in the host campus
community (except Indianapolis and Columbus) at least part of each week
during the fellowship semester(s). Assistance is provided in finding
affordable living accommodations.
- Mid-year assessment get-together
Please note: This fellowship
does not carry a fee remission.
REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced standing in a doctoral
program (90 hours completed and qualifying exam passed at least by the
end of First Summer Session 2004).
- Minimum of one year of teaching
experience as an Associate Instructor
- Completion of a pedagogy course
of at least one semester in length through the applicant's department,
OR Grad G700, "Excellence in Teaching," (3 cr.), offered by the Graduate
School as an intensive course during one of the Summer Sessions in 2004.
- Participation in the FACET
Institute for Future Faculty Teaching Fellows — required for all
who are placed with a fellowship. The Institute will be held during
a weekend in July 2004 at the Four Winds Resort, Lake Monroe. There
is no charge to you for the Institute.
- For International students:
You will need to talk with the IU Office of International Services to
ensure that the fellowship meets the requirements of your student visa.
APPLICATION PACKET
Applications for 2004-05 are due
October 17, 2003.
The application questionnaire
is available from your departmental graduate secretary. For additional
applications, please call or stop by the Graduate School, Kirkwood Hall
111 (855-8852, or 855-8853).
- Typed responses to application
questionnaire
- Statement of teaching philosophy
- Brief teaching portfolio (syllabi,
student/faculty comments — you may summarize and/or retype these
to save space)
- Letters of recommendation (2)
from faculty members. These may be submitted in sealed envelopes with
the application, or sent separately by the faculty members. The letters
should be on paper with signature, not email.
- With the exception of the letters
of recommendation, the entire application should not exceed 15 pages,
and should be submitted unbound, unstapled, and with no internal paperclips.
SELECTION
The number of Future Faculty Teaching
Fellowships and the academic fields in which openings are available are
determined by the faculty needs of the host campuses. The selection process
is competitive and will include interviews with departments at the host
campuses.
