Balázs Gulyás was born in Budapest in 1956. Educated in Budapest, Leuven and Oxford, he is now affiliated with the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, where he works in the field of functional neuroimaging. His interest spans from the localization of cognitive functions through receptor fingerprinting of the human brain to neuropsychiatric drug development. He is an external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and organizer of the World Science Forum Series at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2003, 2005).
