Graduate Scholarships

  1. Read all scholarship descriptions below carefully to make certain that you qualify. Applying for inappropriate scholarships may disqualify you from receiving HPER scholarships.

The application form for the 2008-2009 School of HPER scholarships and fellowships will be open from December 3, 2007 until February 1, 2008.

Department of Applied Health Science Awards

Crane Fund for Widows and Children Scholarship
Awarded to needy and deserving widows and children of men who, at their death, have left their widows and children without adequate means of support or to deserving wives and/or children of men upon whom they are dependent for support but, because of age or other disability, are unable or, for other reasons, fail or neglect to adequately support their respective wives and/or children. Students with disabilities and financial need are also eligible. (Minimum value of scholarship is $750)

Ruth Mary Griswold Scholarship
GPA of 3.25 or above. Must have completed a minimum of 9 credit hours in the major at IU. Written statement of professional goals and how they will be attained. Restricted to students with a major in nutrition, dietetics, or human development/family studies. (Minimum value of scholarship is $750)

Ron Hall Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Applied Health Science with a major in the field of safety education.  Preference will be given to a distinguished graduate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, who shows promise in this area of study.  The Scholarship may also be given to a qualifying undergraduate student. The Scholarship may be given to a qualifying student at either the IU Bloomington or the IU Southeast campus.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $500)

Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in healthcare services, particularly related to the treatment of physical and mental handicaps (healthcare, public health, therapeutic recreation, and adapted physical education majors). Evidence of active participation in applicable volunteer and/or work experience, and future career aspirations reflecting the spirit of this award are required. (Value of each scholarship is $3,000.)

Donald Ludwig Scholarship
The Scholarship will be awarded annually to master’s degree level students in Applied Health Science who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or better and who is pursuing studies in the area of school health or public health. (Minimum value of scholarship is $500)

Pantaleoni Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in occupational safety or safety management respectively who best meet the following qualifications: 1. Admitted as a major in the Department of Applied Health Science.  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.  3. Preference shall be given to students with an “improving track record,” who are achieving at the highest level of their ability.  4. Preference shall also be given to student with financial need.  Minority students and those from non-traditional educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $500)

J.K. Rash Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded to a recipient who meets the following criteria: 1. Candidates must be doctoral students admitted to the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and the Department of Applied Health Science, Indiana University, Bloomington.  2. The student must be enrolled in residence as a full-time student (10-12 graduate hours) or be working on a dissertation on a full-time basis.  3. The student must demonstrate active participation in professional organizations; such as ASHA, APHA, NSC, Eta Sigma Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, AAHE, and /or other organizations.  4. The student must demonstrate satisfactory progress in a doctoral program.  5. The student must have financial need.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $1000)

Margaret Seberger Scholarship
Awarded to needy and deserving students, undergraduate or graduate, interested in the study of nutrition and who are willing to conduct research in the area of nutrition. Funds used only for study or research and not for travel or other indirect expenses. (Minimum value of scholarship is $750)

Department of Kinesiology Awards

Cooper Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to graduate students working in the School’s human performance laboratories, with preference given to doctoral students in biomechanics working on related research.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $1000)

John R. Endwright Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a graduate student at Indiana University Bloomington in the Department of Kinesiology who intend to pursue a career in teaching.  The recipient(s) shall demonstrate financial need.  (Value of scholarship is $500)

Gallahue-Morris Graduate Research Award
Annual award for an outstanding student in motor development or motor control. May be a master's student or a doctoral student. (Value of award is $300)

Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in healthcare services, particularly related to the treatment of physical and mental handicaps (healthcare, public health, therapeutic recreation, and adapted physical education majors). Marjorie R. Phillips Scholarship
Scholarship to be awarded to a woman graduate student with a declared major in Kinesiology. To receive the Scholarship, the applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. Preference will be given to those who, through their vitae and work experience, exhibit the following characteristics: integrity, professionalism and dedication to their chosen field.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $1500)

Lucile M. Swift- Mona M. Russell Scholarships
Scholarship shall be awarded, one to an undergrad (applicant must be of junior standing who will be entering his or her senior year) and one to a graduate student in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, who have demonstrated a desire to complete requirements for the degree being sought.  The recipients shall demonstrate initiative, character, need and scholastic achievement of potential candidates.  The scholarships are to be used to assist the recipients in the payment of tuition, fees and/or book costs.  (Minimum value of each scholarship is $1500)

Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies Awards

Bradford Woods Outdoor Adventure Therapy—Outdoor Therapeutic Recreation Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in therapeutic outdoor programming and targeted to people with disabilities or other societal disadvantages. Must be evidenced by related course work and work or volunteer work in this concentration. Graduate students must be accepted as a major in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. (Value of scholarship is $600)

Clinical Faculty Therapeutic Recreation Award
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing therapeutic recreation targeted to people with disabilities or other societal disadvantages. Must be evidenced by related course work and work or volunteer experience. (Value of scholarship is $300)

Garrett G. Eppley Scholarship
Awarded to a distinguished graduate student(s) in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies. Evidence of academic and scholarly excellence in addition to direct involvement in the field of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies is a prerequisite.

Hronek Family Scholarship in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies
Scholarship awarded to students in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies meeting the following criteria: 1. The student must be a junior, first semester senior, or a graduate student with at least one academic year remaining before graduation.  2. The student must be in the upper 30% of his or her class with respect to grade point average within the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies. Graduate students must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.4 based on a 4.0 scale.  3. The student must officially be enrolled on a full-time basis in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.  The student may be enrolled in any of the Department’s academic options.  4. The student must demonstrate financial need and a positive attitude.  (Minimum value of scholarship is $1000)

Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in healthcare services, particularly related to the treatment of physical and mental handicaps (healthcare, public health, therapeutic recreation, and adapted physical education majors). Evidence of active participation in applicable volunteer and/or work experience, and future career aspirations reflecting the spirit of this award are required. (Value of each scholarship is $3,000.)

Sharpless Family Hawaii Fieldwork Scholarship
Awarded to student majors in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies to defray expenses of those currently involved in fieldwork, or who have completed fieldwork at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii.  (Value of each scholarship is $400.)
