Undergraduate Scholarships

Department of Applied Health Science Awards
Opal G. Conrad Nutrition Scholarship
Awarded to Indiana residents who are undergraduates majoring
in or demonstrating proficiency in the areas of nutrition and/or dietetics. (Minimum
value of award is $500)
Crane Fund for Widows and Children Scholarship
Awarded to needy and deserving widows and children of men who, at their
death, have left their widows and children without adequate means of
support or to deserving wives and/or children of men upon whom they are dependent
for support but, because of age or other disability, are unable or,
for other reasons, fail or neglect to adequately support their respective
wives and/or children. Students with disabilities and financial need are
also eligible. (Minimum value of award is $750)
Ruth Mary Griswold Scholarship
GPA of 3.25 or above. Completion of two full semesters after being
admitted to a major program in the Department of Applied Health Science.
Enrolled for at least 12 credit hours in current semester. Written
statement of professional goals and how they will be attained. Restricted
to students with a major in nutrition, dietetics, or human development/family
studies. (Minimum value of award is $750)
Ron Hall Scholarship
Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Applied Health
Science with a major in the field of safety education. Preference will
be given to a distinguished graduate student with a cumulative GPA
of 3.0 or higher who shows promise in this area of study. The scholarship
may also be given to a qualifying undergraduate student. This award
may be given to a qualifying student at either the IU Bloomington or the
IU Southeast campus. (Minimum value of scholarship is $500)
Archie M. and Eleanor Williamson Koon Scholarship
Awarded to a second- or third-year undergraduate student pursuing the
study of nutrition in the Department of Applied Health Science. (Minimum
value of scholarship is $800)
Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in
health care services, particularly related to the treatment of physical
and mental handicaps (health care, public health, therapeutic recreation,
and adapted physical education majors). Evidence of active participation
in applicable volunteer and/or work experience, and future career aspirations
reflecting the spirit of this award are required. (Value of each scholarship
is $3,000.)
Pantaleoni Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to undergraduate and graduate students majoring
in occupational safety or safety management respectively who best meet
the following qualifications: 1. Admitted as a major in the Department
of Applied Health Science. 2. Minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and
3.0 for graduate students. 3. Preference shall be given to students
with an “improving track record,” who are achieving at the highest
level of their ability. 4. Preference shall also be given to student
with financial need. Minority students and those from non-traditional
educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. (Minimum value of
scholarship $500)
W. W. Patty Scholarship
Scholarships for majors in HPER holding junior class standing or above.
General qualifications: acceptable level of scholastic achievement
and professional participation in the activities of the school. (Minimum
value of scholarship is $750)
Margaret Seberger Scholarship
Awarded to needy and deserving student(s), undergraduate or graduate,
interested in the study of nutrition and who is (are) willing to conduct
research in the area of nutrition. Funds used only for study or research
and not for travel or other indirect expenses. (Minimum value of scholarship
is $750.)
Joan Weinberg Wolf Scholarship for Dietetics
Scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student studying Dietetics
in the Department of Applied Health Science. Scholarships must support
students enrolled in the School who is/are studying dietetics, and who have
a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0 on
a 4 point scale. Preference is given to those in financial need. (Minimum
value of award is $3000)
Department of Kinesiology Awards
Aquatics Institute Scholarship
The recipient will have a minimum GPA 3.5 from Aquatic Minor core courses and
who is rated as performing the best in Aquatic Practicum evaluations. If
no student applicant meets the requirements above, then a student applicant
will be selected based on cumulative GPA at Indiana University and record of
volunteer work in aquatics programs. (Value of scholarship is $500)
Academic and Extracurricular Excellence Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to out-of-state students demonstrating academic
and extracurricular excellence. Criteria for the scholarship is as follows: 1. Accepted
as a major in the Department of Kinesiology. 2. Must be an out-of-state
student with permanent residence outside the state of Indiana. 3. Cumulative
GPA of 3.9 or higher (3.8 is acceptable if excellence exists in criteria 4).
Unsolicited references or nominations from faculty will add weight to these criteria. 4.
Involvement in HPER via research, volunteering, club leadership or involvement,
work in the Division of Recreational Sports or a company related to identified
major, teaching or other active involvement in the School of HPER. 5. Financial
need. (Minimum value of scholarship is $2000)
Harry Dippold Scholarship
Awarded to undergraduate students, majoring in Kinesiology, with demonstrated
financial need. (Minimum value of scholarship is $1,000.)
Spike Dixon Scholarship
Scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding student in the athletic
training major. To receive the scholarship, applicants must meet
the following qualifications: 1. High academic achievement. 2.
Evidence of both “success and promise” in the profession of
athletic training. 3. Professional involvement in his/her chosen
career. 4. Evidence of dedication to making athletic training a life-long
career. (Minimum value of scholarship is $1000)
Nancy Friedman Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a junior or senior female student in the Department
of Kinesiology majoring in and admitted to the teacher preparation program. The
student shall exhibit a commitment to teach physical education and present
evidence of participation in professional activities as determined by the
selection/scholarship committee. Furthermore, the recipient shall
be deemed by the committee to be working to her fullest potential. (Minimum
value of scholarship is $1000)
Leroy "Bud" Getchell Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student with a major in the Department of
Kinesiology who has an interest in the study of fitness, and who best
meets the following qualifications: 1. Satisfactory completion of Current
Concepts in Physical Fitness (P216) and Introduction to Exercise Science
(P212). 2. Evidence of involvement in fitness. 3. Exemplifies
a physically fit person with regular workouts. 4. Evidence of leadership
in fitness programs. 5. Demonstration of work experience in the area
of fitness. 6. Works or volunteers in fitness instructional classes
(e.g. E119 – Personal Fitness). 7. Active in the Kinesiology
Club (Minimum value of scholarship is $500)
Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in
healthcare services, particularly related to the treatment of physical
and mental handicaps (healthcare, public health, therapeutic recreation,

Edna F. Munro Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate woman who has been accepted into the teacher
preparation program. Qualifications include outstanding potential for
teaching ability, cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and evidence of
extracurricular participation. (Minimum value of scholarship is $1,000)
W. W. Patty Scholarship
Scholarships for majors in HPER holding junior class standing or above.
General qualifications: acceptable level of scholastic achievement
and professional participation in the activities of the school. (Minimum
value of award is $750.)
Kate C. Remley Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a female student in the Department of Kinesiology. The
recipient will be a full-time student at IUB, with a minimum 3.0 GPA, completion
of a minimum of 56 credit hours, and working during the academic year a minimum
of 10 hours per week validated by the employer. The recipient shall
be the student with the highest GPA above 3.0 who meets the other stated
qualifications. The recipient shall be a full-time student (minimum
of 12 credit hours) for each semester the Scholarship is received. The
Scholarship is renewable. (Minimum value of scholarship is $4000)
Curtis R. Simic Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring
in the PETE program who meets the following qualifications: 1. Student
must be of junior standing who will be entering his or her senior year
at IU. 2.
Minimum GPA 2.5. 3. Demonstrate outstanding potential as a teacher. 4.
Preference will be given to a student with an “improving record,” who
is achieving at the highest level of his or her ability. 5. Minority students
and those from non-traditional educational backgrounds are encouraged to
apply. Other factors such as financial needs, academic progress, and
professional goals may be considered in selecting the recipient. (Value
of scholarship is $1000)
Lucile M. Swift- Mona M. Russell Scholarships
Scholarship shall be awarded, one to an undergrad (applicant must be
of junior standing who will be entering his or her senior year) and
one to a graduate student in the School of Health, Physical Education,
and Recreation, who have demonstrated a desire to complete requirements
for the degree being sought. The recipients shall demonstrate initiative, character, need
and scholastic achievement of potential candidates. The scholarships
are to be used to assist the recipients in the payment of tuition, fees and/or
book costs. (Minimum value of scholarship is $1500)
The Jane Fox Dance Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in
dance classes or active in the dance programs of the Department of
Kinesiology.
Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies Awards
Aquatics Institute Scholarship
The recipient will have a minimum GPA 3.5 from Aquatic Minor core courses and
who is rated as performing the best in Aquatic Practicum evaluations. If

Lyle and Evelyn Beaver General Recreation Trust
Awarded to a deserving student at Indiana University Bloomington who
has chosen the field of recreation as their major. (Value of scholarship
is $250.)
Bradford Woods Outdoor Adventure Therapy—Outdoor Therapeutic Recreation
Award
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in outdoor
recreation targeted to people with disabilities or other societal disadvantages.
Must be evidenced by related course work and work or volunteer experience. Undergraduate
students must be of junior standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA. (Value of scholarship
is $600.)
Clinical Faculty Therapeutic Recreation Award
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing therapeutic
recreation targeted to people with disabilities or other societal disadvantages.
Must be evidenced by related course work and work or volunteer experience.
Undergraduate students must be of junior standing or senior standing
with a minimum of 2.5 GPA. (Value of scholarship is $300.)
Hamilton Center Therapeutic Recreation Award
Awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a career in therapeutic
recreation targeted to people with disabilities or other societal disadvantages;
specifically those with mental illness or MRDD. Must be evidenced by
related course work and work or volunteer experience. Undergraduate
students must be of junior standing with a minimum of 2.5 GPA. (Value
of scholarship is $300.)
Hronek Family Scholarship in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies
Scholarship awarded to students in the Department of Recreation, Park,
and Tourism Studies meeting the following criteria: 1. The student
must be a junior, first semester senior, or a graduate student with
at least one academic year remaining before graduation. 2. The student must be in the upper 30% of his or her
class with respect to grade point average within the Department of Recreation,
Park, and Tourism Studies. Graduate students must have a minimum undergraduate
grade point average of 3.4 based on a 4.0 scale. 3. The student must officially
be enrolled on a full-time basis in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism
Studies in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The
student may be enrolled in any of the Department’s academic options. 4.
The student must demonstrate financial need and a positive attitude. (Minimum
value of scholarship is $1000)
John Andrew Jarboe Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for students majoring in Recreation on the Bloomington
campus of Indiana University. Preference will be given first to undergraduate students
concentrating their study in the area of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies
with an emphasis on Outdoor Recreation, and second, to the undergraduate student
in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies with the highest GPA. (Minimum
value of scholarship is $2500)

Sharpless Family Hawaii Fieldwork Scholarship
Awarded to student majors in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies
to defray expenses of those currently involved in fieldwork, or who have
completed fieldwork at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii. (Value of
each scholarship is $400.)
Campus Recreational Sports

Jim and Deanna Arterberry Scholarship
Awarded to a deserving School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation
student who is also employed by Campus Recreational Sports
with a GPA of 3.0 or better; employee performance will be evaluated
by Campus Recreational Sports personnel. Nominations are submitted
by personnel and nominees are contacted to complete an application.
Applications are reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of the
Chair of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies, the Chair of Kinesiology,
the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and two employees from Campus
Recreational Sports. The award is presented at the School of HPER Undergraduate
Honors Reception in the spring semester.
The Hurst-Schlafer Scholarship
Presented annually to an outstanding junior in the School of Health,
Physical Education, and Recreation. Students must possess a satisfactory
grade point average and also demonstrate outstanding leadership and
participation in Campus Recreational Sports; this level of satisfaction
will be determined by personnel of Campus Recreational Sports
in consultation with the Dean of the School. The scholarship is provided
by the family of the late Lloyd Hurst of Highland, Indiana, in honor
of the late George Schlafer, who was Director of the Intramural Sports
Program and Professor in the Department of Physical Education. Nominations
are submitted by personnel and nominees are contacted to complete
an application. Applications are reviewed by Recreational Sports personnel
and the Dean of the School of HPER. The award is presented at the School
of HPER Undergraduate Honors Reception in the spring semester.
