Office of the Dean
Welcome from the Dean
As one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of its type in the world, the School of HPER is committed to excellence in research and scholarly inquiry, teaching, and learning, and in professional service and service delivery. With more than 17,000 graduates from 42 different countries and cooperative programs on five continents, HPER has become a leader in research and scholarly activity. With a sustained record of external grants and contracts that place us fourth among the 12 schools on campus, we are arguably one of the preeminent research schools of our type in the nation.
Our longstanding distinguished reputation for excellence in teaching and student learning reflects our passion for people and community. In 2005, we attracted 30 percent more students than we did just two years ago. HPER’s passion for people and community has made us the fastest-growing major on campus, with both our undergraduate and graduate programs at an all-time high, making us the third-largest unit on campus.
The students we attract to HPER are academically prepared to excel as career professionals. Our average SAT scores exceed both state and national averages for high school students entering college. The GRE scores of our graduate students are also excellent, with our all-school average significantly above the national average in verbal, quantitative, and analytic areas. Our curricula are both rigorous and relevant to real-world concerns, preparing students for careers that have a national and international impact on people’s health.
HPER’s prestigious faculty embodies a diverse community of dedicated scholars and professionals. We are committed to student learning, scholarly inquiry, and meaningful service.
The School of HPER is making a difference—in the lives of the citizens of Indiana, the nation, and the world. By working together, by persisting with our research, service, and continued exploration of health, movement, and leisure sciences, we are realizing our vision of a better world.
Live Well,
Robert M. Goodman, Dean
