Program Organization
- IU’s Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC); IU’s Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS); Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL)
- Up to 8 students
Academic Program
- 6 IU credits
- Intensive language study at the advanced (third-year) level
- Extensive cultural exposure through afternoon and evening activities and week-end trips to near-by historic sites
- 4-8 students per class
Housing
- Home-stays with Azerbaijani families arranged by the AUL
Eligibility
You may apply if you:
- Are a student at any American or foreign university who is making normal academic progress;
- Are a student in at least your 7 th full semester of undergraduate study;
- Are a student with two full years of formal study of Azerbaijani; OR,
- Are a student who is a native speaker of Turkish; OR,
- Are a student with two full years of formal study of Turkish
NB. If your background includes one or the other of the final two possibilities listed above, you must agree to enroll in a special “bridge” course at the AUL for two weeks prior to the commencement of the advanced Azerbaijani program. This course will provide a transition from Turkish to Azerbaijani based on the closeness of the two languages .
Estimated 2008 Costs
- IU fees: $355, of which
- Non-remittable: $283
- Health coverage: $72
- Azerbaijani visa: $130 (approx.)
- International Travel: approx. $2,500 (Student makes own arrangements)
- Local Accommodations: $200/month for 2.5 months = $500 (Set up by AUL)
- Meals and Local Transportation: $500/month for 2.5 months = $1,200 (Organized with AUL)
- Total: $4,685

Financial Aid
- FLAS and other funding opportunities should be sought through a student’s home institution. NB. FLASes in particular have early deadlines for application (typically February 1)
- Possibility of limited financial aid from AUL for those applying by March 1 deadline
Application Deadlines
- March 1—Early submission of application (necessary for consideration of any AUL financial aid)
- April 15—Final date for submission of application
- June 1—Final date for submission of deposit
IU committee screens applications and makes recommendations to the Director of the IAUNRC and Chair of CEUS
