IAUNRC CERTIFICATE

The purpose of the IAUNRC certificate is to provide an opportunity for graduate students in other departments (at the M.A. or Ph.D. level) to add area specialization to their degrees.

The diversity of the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC) makes the creation of a certificate more complex than for most programs or centers at IU. The Center covers a vast territory (including such dissimilar areas as Tibet, Central Asia, and Finland), as well as very diverse disciplines, among them linguistics, business and music. This variety in and of itself precludes the possibility of creating even a core course for the Center.

The IAUNRC Certificate allows students to receive recognition for courses related to Inner Asia and Uralic Studies with a more flexible program than is now available through CEUS. It is more flexible because of the reduced number of required hours and because courses from other (i.e., non-CEUS) departments or schools can be applied toward the certificate if they contain a sufficient level of area studies content.

The IAUNRC certificate requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of graduate course work, including 9 credit hours from CEUS (or in the case of Turkish Studies, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and/or CEUS). All courses will be selected in consultation with the IAUNRC director. (Because of the diversity of regions covered by the Center, the director, as necessary, will consult with relevant faculty specializing in each particular region.)

Students arerequired to demonstrate intermediate competence in a relevant language. No credit toward the Certificate will be awarded for first-year language courses. No more than 6 hours of language courses may be counted toward the Certificate.

Non-CEUS Courses: The Center director will determine the suitability of non-CEUS courses much in the way this is currently done in REEI. Courses determined to have at least 25 percent IAUNRC-area specific content will be approved. This requirement may be met, for example, through a paper or project dealing with part of the IAUNRC region, or through this in combination with a substantial part of the lectures and other classroom presentations devoted to the region. For each non-CEUS course students must provide a copy of a course description with a memorandum demonstrating the course’s relevance to the region.

Because we anticipate that this program will appeal to only a small number of students, and because their needs will be extremely diverse, IAUNRC does not compose a list of “approved” courses each semester. All CEUS courses will be eligible for credit toward the Certificate.
