Please see the IAUNRC FLAS page and the IU FLAS website for more details. The views reflected in any job posting or on any web site linked below do not necessarily reflect the views of the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center.  We provide these links as a service to the public.

Because many grants are offered on an annual basis, even if the application deadline has passed, you could write to the address provided and find out when the next application period will begin.  Also be sure to look at the web sites given, as they may contain other fellowship information.

Undergraduate/Graduate Grants and Fellowships

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are awarded to universities in order to promote the graduate training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign cultures is a prerequisite for success. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FLAS fellowships.

1. Academic Year FLAS:

Each fellowship covers the academic year and carries a stipend. In addition, the fellowship provides a fee remission for up to 12 credits of coursework each semester (a total of 24 credits). Recipients of FLAS fellowships must undertake full-time study during the period of the award and be enrolled in formal instruction in the language of the award.

IAUNRC accepts applications for the study of the following languages in the 2008-2009 academic year: Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Kazakh, Mongolian, Persian/Tajik, Tibetan, Turkish, Uzbek, and Uyghur. If you wish to take level three or beyond of a language not offered in the regular IU schedule of classes, you may apply for the Advanced Directed Language Study.  Applications must include:

  • FLAS application;
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended;
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address the applicant's abilities in foreign language training;
  • Statement on language training and proposed program of study; and
  • ADLS application (if applicable)

2. Summer FLAS for Non-IU Language Instruction:

Title VI FLAS fellowships may be awarded to an Indiana University student for summer language instruction at another institution (in the U.S. or abroad) in a language or level of language study not available at IU SWSEEL. The award includes fee remission and a stipend. Applicants for the summer FLAS for a non-SWSEEL program should fill out the academic year FLAS application and submit it to IAUNRC by March 1, 2008 .

3. Summer FLAS for IU SWSEEL:

Title VI FLAS fellowships are awarded to graduate students enrolled in intensive instruction in the Indiana University Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European, and Central Asian Languages (SWSEEL). Eligible languages will include Azeri, Kazakh, Mongolian, Tajik, Turkmen, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Awards include fee remission and stipends.
