CHANGES: Readings for ESL Writers
Edited by Jean Withrow, Gay Brooks, and Martha C. Cummings

Three professors from the City University of New York have compiled a wonderful collection of short story narratives written by ESL students in America.

The book is broken into five chapters that address various aspects of starting a new life in a different culture. The chapters are titled: Leaving/Arrivng, Two Worlds, Birth/Death, Personal Growth and Change, and Change and Reisiting Change.

The stories vary in length, some being only a brief paragraph while others, several pages. The authenticy of the narratives are sure to stir the emotions of all readers. ESL students could bennefit from reading these stories as a way to reflect on issues they face in their own lives. Reading the words of people who have overcome the daily struggles of language barriers, culture clashes, and alienation encourages students and helps them to know they are not alone.

The War of the Worlds
by H.G. Wells

Thirty-Five million miles into space, a species of Martians sets eyes on planet Earth. With their own planet doomed for destruction, the Martians prepare to invade. Ther weapons are ready and their aim is ruthless. The war of the worlds is about to begin...

This classic American tale of aliens and war is surely to engage the most uninterested of students. The radio broadcast that terrorized America and Tom Cruise's recent movie are an excellent way to support this book.
El León, la bruja y el ropero
By C.S. Lewis

The Spanish version of Lewis' classic tale The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe could very well become a favorite in your classroom. The recent film has piqued students' interests and left them hungering for more. Don't hesitate to stock your classrooms with this magical story!
