Our first full cohort is now in the practicum stage of their journey! This is very exciting because they are very close to applying for their additional license in ESL instruction. This year’s practicum has been revamped to make it even more practical and useful for our TACIT students. We also feel that this covers the Department of Professional Standards requirements very well. As always, a matrix of how our courses meet the DPS standards is available to anyone upon request. (Note: It is a large document.) The IDOE state standards can be view at http://ideanet.doe.state.in.us/dps/standards/EnglishNewLanguageContStds.html

Another exciting happening is that our second cohort has just begun their journey. The majority of our 2006-07 cohort have enrolled in L541 with one person in L545 and another in L535. If you are someone who is currently in ICP and you are curious about titles and descriptions of these courses, below you will find a brief listing.

L541 Writing Instruction for TESL Teachers (3 cr.) This class will study the current trends and issues in the teaching and learning of ESL/EFL writing. We will focus on the development and evaluation of techniques and materials for classroom instruction, emphasizing the analysis of student writing and troubleshooting common problems second language learners encounter.

  • L535 Teaching Adolescent/Young Adult Literature (3 cr.) The course highlights and analyzes recent young adult literature, acknowledging significant earlier texts and their distinguishing features. It also considers curricular and pedagogical issues salient to the adoption of multicultural curricula.
  • L545 Advanced Study in the Teaching of Reading in Elementary Schools (3 cr.) Review of the developmental reading program in the elementary school, use of reading in various curriculum areas, appraisal of reading abilities, and techniques and materials for individualized instruction.

Our rosters for upcoming years are continuing to fill up quickly; however, ICP participants may wish to contact me for further information. I can put you on the list for a future cohort, but it is difficult to predict availability at this time. The 2007-08 is looking full at this point, but our grant will continue through the 2009-10 school year. Please feel free to put your name on this list, though, because you never know when someone will have a change of plans and a place may open up for you!
