UFRIC

PEOPLE

UFRIC is housed in the Department of Forestry at Makerere University. The center is directed by Dr. William Gombya-Ssembajjwe, assisted byDr. Abwoli Banana. Data management is by Mr. Joseph Bahati. In addition, staff members in the department who have received the initial training in IFRI methodology are always called upon as necessary when a new site is being established. These include Ms. Gorettie Nabanoga, Monica Kapiriri, Ann Nakaweesi, and Mr. George Mwambu. In addition, a senior technician, Mr. Sekindi and a forest worker, Mr. Matovu who are familiar with the IFRI research methodology, and specialize in tree species identification, are members of the UFRIC team. Effort has been made to train staff of the Forestry Research Institute (FORI), NGO's such as ATABU, NEMA Forum, IRDI and the Economics Department, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. We also have Makerere University students participating in our forestry fieldwork. The number of people involved in the program is increasing, and we are interested in having more people involved. We plan to devote particular attention to members of non-governmental organizations who, in their operations, interact with local people and natural resources.

The African Studies Program at Indiana University, Bloomington is directed by Dr. York Bradshaw, while the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, also at Indiana University Bloomington, is co-directed by Dr. Elinor Ostrom. Both, together with UFRIC directors were actively involved in the conceptualization of this web site, in searching for possible funding sources and ultimately putting together a team that would design and maintain the page. Dr. Clark Gibson and Charlotte Hess provide content- and design-related advice to the web designers.

Web design, maintenance and updating is done by Esther Mwangi and Mark Schaffer. Both are graduate students at Indiana University. Technical support, for both software and hardware, is provided by Joseph Bahati (of UFRIC, currently a graduate student at IU), Bob Lezotte and Ray Eliason, both from the Workshop.
