Preparation of Grant Applications
A primary function of the Institute is the provision of
assistance to sociology faculty seeking external funding for their
research. The I.U.
Graduate Grant Center can provide faculty a wealth of funding
information. The various Grant Center on-line databases, accessed
through their office and other
Web services they maintain can serve as valuable tools. I.U.
Sociology Department also maintains a
Webpage
dedicated to grant funding information on the Internet.
All applications for funded research should be filed through
the Institute. While the actual preparation of the grant application
is the investigator's responsibility, the Institute's staff are
willing to aid in any way possible. In particular, we want to
examine the budget portion of a request to make certain that it
includes appropriate funding for computer resources. In addition, we
wish to make certain that it includes adequate sums for research
assistance, secretarial help, supplies and so on. If the proposed
research involves collection of survey data, Dr. John Kennedy and
the staff of the Center for Survey Research will prepare an estimate
of these costs. The SISR will also assist in producing multiple
copies of proposals that agencies require to be submitted.
Applicants often fail to appreciate the substantial time required to
process proposals through the University. We recommend that
materials be submitted to the Institute at least 6 weeks prior
to the agency's deadline.
