1989-1990: Cultural Values, Child Care Policy and Children's Peer
Cultures in the United States and Italy

N and Sampling Procedure: This part of the study (American) has two components:
(1) a telephone interview of a random sample of mothers; assessing child care
and education needs and facilities in the Bloomington-Indianapolis area. (2)
This component involves ethnographic observation in two preschools in the area.
Issues/Questions Addressed: The first phase of the project (8/88 through 6/89
the history of child care policy in Italy was documented, interview data of a
sample of Italian mothers regarding their perceptions of the policies and
quality of life of their children was analyzed, and how the policies affect the
daily lives of a sample of Italian children was investigated. The second phase
involves a parallel investigation in the Bloomington-Indianapolis area to
document how child care policy and early education experience affects children's
peer interaction and culture.
