Overview of SISR Services

Support Services:

Pre-proposal Phase

  1. Consult on funding opportunities.

  2. Contact project officers if necessary.

  3. Prepare and submit letters of inquiry/intent to submit.

  4. Recommend timeline for proposal preparation and submission.


Proposal Preparation Phase

  1. Provide comment (internally or via the recruitment of external experts) on the draft proposal.

  2. Consult on budgetary requirements, including calculating investigator release time & fringe benefits, GRA costs and benefits, equipment costs, supply costs, travel costs, and related expenses.

  3. Prepare initial budget, submit initial budget to the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the IU Office of Grants & Contracts, negotiate modifications, and prepare final approved budget.

  4. Prepare abstract; ‘biosketch’; & Table of Contents.

  5. Compile & prepare ‘Resources & Environment’ materials.

  6. Enter, format & print application in compliance with agency protocol.

  7. Print & collate appendices.

  8. Prepare IU internal documents (i.e., route sheets, budget spreadsheets, etc.).

  9. Consult & assist on the preparation of the IRB application


Proposal Submission Phase

  1. ‘Walk’ route sheet through IU channels & obtain required signatures.

  2. Make required number of copies of final application.

  3. Prepare and mail application to funding agency.


Post Award Phase

  1. Provide routine budget & account administration.

  2. Provide research office space, on a space available basis (as identified in the application and ‘signed off’ by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Chair of the Department of Sociology), and consistent with SISR & Department of Sociology policies as approved by the Department of Sociology Executive Committee (see below** for the approved Department of Sociology priorities for the allocation of space in the SISR).

  3. Prepare and submit routine continuation applications.

  4. Prepare and submit competing continuation applications.

  5. Prepare and submit ‘close-out’ report.

Note: The preferred timetable of proposal preparation & submission is for the investigator to: 1) meet with SISR staff (i.e., Martin, McLeod, & Brown) 3 months in advance of the agency deadline to determine agency-specific requirements for application requirements and to file conflict of interest forms (if necessary); 2) consult with the SISR Executive Director regarding budget requirements and preparation 6 weeks in advance of the agency deadline; 3) four weeks in advance of agency deadline, provide a final text file of the proposal for transfer to agency forms and provide the suggested budget to IU Grants and Contracts for review; and 4) provide a final copy of the revised/modified application to OVPR 3 days in advance of the agency deadline.

**Approved Priorities for the Allocation of Office Space in the SISR:

  1. SISR Administration, Constituent Research Centers, Sociology Graduate Student Laboratory, and the Sociological Research Practicum.

  2. Extra-murally funded Research Grants & Editorial Offices of Major Journals.

  3. State Contracts & Editorial Offices of 2d Tier Journals.

  4. University-funded Faculty Research.

  5. Unfunded Faculty Research.

  6. Graduate students with ‘overhead’ generating grants & MFP Fellows.

  7. Graduate students with NSF Dissertation Improvement Grants.

  8. Graduate Teaching Assistants.
