Now that you've been admitted to IU, it's time to take the next step
and start preparing for orientation and your first year on campus. Our
New Student
Orientation program will help you get ready for the exciting time
ahead and give you the tools you need to make a successful transition to
college.
Orientation is required for all new students. Our two-day summer
programs (for incoming freshmen and transfer students) run throughout June
and July. Orientation gives you the opportunity to take care of the
business of becoming an IU student, but it's also when you'll begin to
discover the possibilities available to you. Some of the things you'll do
during orientation include:
- Academic advising, first semester schedule planning, and course
registration
- Take required placement tests in math and foreign language, as well as
various optional placement tests
- Get your student ID card
- Attend information sessions with current students, parents, and
professors
- Stay overnight in a residence hall with other new students
Parent Orientation
Orientation isn't just for students. Your family will play an important
role in your college success, so we offer a program designed especially
for them. It runs concurrent with student orientation and includes
sessions on campus resources, financial aid, academic support services and
programs, and housing.
Registering for Orientation
Starting in mid-April, the Office of Orientation Programs will send out
official invitations for New Student Orientation to admitted students.
Freshmen entering for the fall semester must have paid their $100
enrollment deposit to receive an invitation and reservation information.
You'll be able to make your reservation online and it will be processed in
the order received. Confirmation letters (including your assigned
orientation session) will begin to be sent in early May.
After Orientation
Your IU orientation doesn't end with the two-day experience on campus.
There are two additional programs to keep in mind:
IUBeginnings
Are you an incoming freshman student? Would you like to start your
college experience in a unique way? Take a fun-filled IUBeginnings
adventure. Get to know IU and other new students as you go rock climbing,
canoeing, camping, or complete a community service project. These programs
take place right before the start of the fall semester.
Welcome Week
A key component of your transition to IU is Welcome Week.
Designed to help you become more familiar with IU's people, places, and
resources, Welcome Week will get you connected to the campus, the
community, and all IU has to offer. Welcome Week begins on the same day
the residence centers open for move in. Some highlights of the week
include the Freshman Induction Ceremony and picnic, academic orientation,
and CultureFest.
