IU is a major research university meaning we have the resources and
faculty expertise to offer a huge range of majors, minors, certificates,
and degrees. Our 13 undergraduate schools, plus the College of Arts and
Sciences, give you 133 majors and 326 degree programs from which to
choose. In most fields, graduate study through the doctorate level is
available.
As a transfer student, you will be admitted into the University
Division, the College of Arts and Sciences, or one of our undergraduate
schools. The key factor in determining where you will be placed is how
many hours of transferable college course work you have completed.
- If you have completed fewer than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter
hours), you will automatically be placed into the University Division,
where you will receive personalized advising to help you choose your
program of study at IU.
- If you have completed more than 26 semester hours (or 39 quarter
hours), you will most likely be admitted directly into your chosen major,
although there are some exceptions.

Preprofessional Study
If you're interested in a career in law, medicine, dentistry,
optometry, or a related field, you can plan an undergraduate program
designed to help you gain admission to a leading graduate or professional
school. While IU’s preprofessional programs are not majors themselves (we
do not offer a premedical degree, for example), our Health Professions
and Prelaw Center is an excellent resource providing information about
course selection and requirements, admission test preparation, and
professional school requirements.
