Who is eligible for funding?
HIEP grants are made on a competitive basis. Any IU-Bloomington undergraduate student with a minimum
3.40 cumulative GPA or minimum 3.70 GPA in the major may
apply for this award. There is a preference for
Hutton Honors College students and Hudson & Holland Scholars, and for students studying abroad for a semester or a year, as well
as for students going to non-traditional destinations (ie.
Africa,
Asia,
the Middle East,
Oceania,
South America).
All HIEP awards are made to individual students on the basis of merit, with HIEP awards ranging from $500 to $2500 (based on GPA,
essay, strength of recommendation, destination, and duration of overseas program).
To check your eligibility, please review the following questions:
- Are you a full time IU Bloomington undergraduate student?
- Do you have a 3.40 cumulative or 3.70 major GPA?
- Are you traveling to a country that is not listed on the U.S. Department of State's
travel warning list?
- Will you complete your travels before your official IU graduation date?
Who is not eligible?
- Students who have major IU scholarships that already include support specifically for an
overseas study experience (Wells and Kelley Scholars, for instance) are not
eligible for HIEP awards.
- Students who have previously received a HIEP award are not eligible to receive another HIEP award. All HIEP awards are
one-time-only. EXCEPTIONS: Funding currently allows you to re-apply for the HIEP grant if:
1) if your prior award was for the Kelley BUS G-256 Emerging Economies class.
2) if your prior award was for the Kelley BUS P-255 Business in a Flat World class.
3) if you have been accepted into BUS G-256 or BUS P-255 and meet the HIEP GPA requirement.
- Students receiving funding from the Liberal Arts and Management
Program's (LAMP) Robbins/ Hutton Scholarship Fund cannot receive HIEP
awards during the same semester.
- Students traveling after their undergraduate graduation date are not eligible for the grant. In this case, you
may wish to
talk to the Registrar's office to discuss pushing back your graduation date.
- HIEP awards are made to individual students on a merit basis. They may
not be used to provide blanket support for multiple students for any
particular overseas experience or program.
- Important!
Except for those programs deemed exempt by IU's Overseas Study Office, we will not award grants for travel to
dangerous locations. Dangerous locations include any country or area about which the U.S. Department of State has issued a
travel warning.
The suitability of grant support for travel to other
destinations will be subject to the discretion of the Hutton
Honors College Undergraduate Grant Program awards committee. Please
review the IU Office of Overseas Study
Policy on Study Abroad in
Countries Under Travel Warnings and contact them for clarification.
