Lawrence J. Hanks ( Ph. D., Harvard, 1984) is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. His research and teaching interests include political thought in general and African American political thought in particular, identity politics, race and politics, and African American Politics in particular. His recent scholarship includes co-editing and contributing to Black and Multiracial Politics in America (NYU Press, 2000), book chapters in Upon These Shores: Themes in the African American Experience, 1600 to the Present (Routledge, 2000), and African American Political Participation (ABC-CLIO, 2003). His current projects include two books, Understanding African American Political Thought and Beyond Black Political Empowerment: A Critical Analysis of a Political Strategy for Black Equity.
