As a means of
building bridges and understanding cultures through music, the
International Vocal Ensemble recreates vocal music from outside the
western art tradition. To the degree that it is possible, IVE sings
with integrity of vocal and musical style and always in the native
language. In addition to taking the music of these traditions into
their memorized repertory, another objective is to develop an
understanding of the music in relation to aspects of the culture from
which it comes. The singers meet natives of the culture and learn about
the music and the culture from them. Music is learned directly from our
informants, over real-time internet link-ups and from recorded video
and audio models. Mary Goetze founded the International Vocal Ensemble
in 1995 and retired in 2007, appointing Katherine Domingo as the new director.
IVE welcomes students, faculty, and staff from across the university, as well as members of the local community,
and all rehearsals are open to the public. Rehearsals are Mondays 4:30-6:00pm, Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm, and Wednesdays 4:30-6:00pm, all in Sweeney Hall.

Thanks for a wonderful concert season!
"The passion was ebulliently expressed in the afternoon as the IU International Vocal Ensemble presented a program of songs, choruses and dances from the Americas and Azerbaijan." This was how IVE's April 20, 2008 concert was described by Peter Jacobi, Music Reviewer for The Herald-Times. Read the complete review here.
IVE just completed a wonderful semester of music making, with appearances at the IU Hutton Honors College and the 12th annual Lotus Blossoms Family Day, as well as presenting Music from Southern Appalachia during ArtsWeek 2008 and its spring concert, Music of the Americas.
We begin again in August 2008. To join us, please click here. If you have additional questions, please contact Dr. Domingo by e-mail at kdomingo AT indiana.edu or by phone at 812-855-5979.
