IWEB Lesson Plans: Social Studies, Grades 4-6

American Revolution Simulation
In order for students to understand why the American colonies declared their independence, the students should be able to relate to that which is held most dearly i.e. life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. ACTIVITY: The Queen/King Yuckabella role play.

Archaeology Dig
This activity is to provide students with experience in analyzing artifacts and relics and constructing a hypothetical scenario describing a pre-historic culture.

Orienteering: Map Skills
Orienteering is a sport popular in Australia and Sweden and is used as a training activity in the service. It teaches the participants how to read and use a map. The activity can be adjusted according to grade level by the difficulty of the course and even the use of a compass. Excellent activity for field trips. It's used as a culminating activity to an outdoor unit.

Role Playing the Civil War
To help students comprehend the time frame of colonization to the present we begin with a blank bulletin board with a skeletal outline of the United States. We fill portions as colonies become states. We continue along the same flow into the Civil War unit. Students are really getting excited about the growth of the United States. They understand the time, effort, and work required to bring us as a nation to the point of the Civil War.

Where do you live?
This activity is designed to increase students' awareness of the make-up of the immediate community.

Where in the world is...
I want my students to know if I'm talking about a country or a state in our country. They should see that there is a World, that World has continents, those continents have countries within them, and those countries are divided up into smaller sections, such as states.
