Academic Programs

    • Chicano-Riqueño Studies: An interdisciplinary program that stresses the importance of studying the cultural roots, heritage and contemporary social framework of the Chicano, the Puerto-Rican and other Spanish-speaking people of the U.S.

    • Latino Studies Program: The goal of the new program is to introduce students to a wide range of current research and scholarly opinion on the history, culture and social status of Latinos in the United States. It will provide the opportunity for students to develop a deep understanding of Latinos from an interdisciplinary perspective. In addition to offering courses, this department will enhance the IU campus and Bloomington community through lectures, conferences, seminars, exhibits and research.

    • Latin American and Caribbean Studies: The Center has served as a pivotal site for interdisciplinary research and instruction about Latin America and the Caribbean. Drawing on more sixty eight-faculty members, CLACS offers several programs of study for undergraduate and graduate students on topics related to Latin America and the Caribbean. CLACS also coordinates and promotes the teaching of courses in lesser-taught languages of the region. Additionally, it sponsors a wide range of lectures, conferences and cultural events highlighting aspects of the region's cultures and societies.

    • Latin American Music Center: The Latin American Music Center fosters the research and performance of Latin American art music. Founded in 1961 by distinguished composer and musicologist Juan Orrego-Salas, the Center continues to expand its important library, promotes exchanges between musicians and scholars from the United States and Latin America, and commissions, performs, and records exemplary music from the region.

    • Minority Languages and Cultures of Latin American Program: The Minority Languages and Cultures Program (ML&CP) brings together scholars who share the aims of revitalizing subordinate languages in Latin America, documenting the cultures of the communities that speak them, and monitoring the play of language and culture in the ethnic and regional politics of this zone.

    • Spanish and Portuguese Department: The department offers courses at all levels, elementary through graduate, in the language and literature of Spain/Spanish America, Portugal, Brazil, and Lusophone Africa, and Catalonia. This department offers a minor and a BA in either Spanish or Portuguese. The department also works with the School of Education to prepare students who wish to qualify for teacher certification.
