These sources have been selected by staff and faculty. If you would like to see a favorite site included or a least favorite omitted, please let us know your opinion.

Note: Generally, links listed under the History of Art focus on the study of a certain area and those listed under Studio focus on the practice of a certain discipline. However, such divisions are artificial, at best, so be sure to check all subcategories that apply to your interests.

AFRICAN ART

Art and Life in Africa Project: A program on African art based on The Stanley Collection at The University of Iowa Museum of Art. The program seeks to recontextualize African art objects through multimedia technologies. Its online resources include databases of African peoples and countries, maps, and links to other sites. The project's CD-ROM is due out in Summer 1998.
H-Afrarts: Cosponsored by Humanities and Social Sciences OnLine (H-Net) and the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA), this site "focuses on the expressive cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora." Archives of H-Afrarts Discussion list, exhibition announcements, reviews.
Modern African Art: A Basic Reading List: Annotated bibliography of books and exhibition catalogs on modern African art. Compiled by Janet Stanley of the National Museum of African Art Library, Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
National Museum of African Art: Selections from the museum's collections and information on the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives, Warren M. Robbins Library, educational programs and press releases.

AMERICAN ART

Archives of American Art: News, collection descriptions, finding aids, and the online catalog of "the largest collection of documents on the history of the visual arts in the United States".
National Museum of American Art: The National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution is the first federal art collection in the United States.

ARCHITECTURE

Architecture and Building: Net Resources: Meta-list compiled by Jeanne M. Brown, Architecture Studies Librarian University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Covers a diverse array of topics relating to architecture and design.
archINFORM: Database of 20th century architects and their works, including both built and unrealized projects. Browsable by architect and location (in English) and keyword (in German). Text is primarily German, but the plentiful selection of dates, project lists, and pictures transcend language differences.

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art
Folk Art Society of America
Interesting Ideas: "The Bible of Outsider Art," Interesting Ideas is a comprehensive guide to online resources for "outsider art." It also contains some material on folk art. The site is divided into three sections: The Outsider Pages (book revies and online links); The Idea Barn; and Roadside Art Online.

Morris Museum of Art: Located in Augusta, GA, the Morris Museum of Art is dedicated to the exploration of art and artists from the American South.

Outside Art Auctions: Online catalog including images for the "outsider art" auctions held periodically by Kimball M. Sterling, Inc. of Johnson City, TN.

ISLAMIC ART

Islamic Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: This brief introduction to Islamic art is illustrated with images from LACMA's collection. Includes a list of dynasties, map, and glossary.

MEDIEVAL ART

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies: "The Labyrinth provides free, organized access to electronic resources in medieval studies through a World Wide Web server at Georgetown University." Look for art information under headings for individual National cultures, International cultures/Arts and Architecture, and Special Topics.
MEDART-L: Mailing list for Medieval Art. Search on MEDART-L in a directory of mailing lists, such as Liszt, to find out how to get information on this list and how to subscribe.

BOOK ARTS

Book Arts Web: Large collection of information and links on the books art, collected by book artist Peter Verheyen. Among its contents: organizations, study opportunities, tutorials, and an FAQ on BOOKARTS-L, the book arts mailing list.
Center for the Book Arts: Exhibitions, membership information, class schedules and apprenticeship opportunities are among the resources available at the Center, which "is dedicated to the preservation of the traditional crafts of bookmaking, as well as contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object."

Ceramics Monthly: This companion site to the print version of Ceramics Monthly includes include a detailed listing of "Calls for Entries" and a searchable index of feature articles going back to 1953. The site also lists the table of contents for the current issue of the print version of Ceramics Monthlyand publishes selected complete articles.

ArtMetal.com: Devoted to fostering communication between metalsmiths and educating the public about metalwork, ArtMetal.com provides features, discussion lists, and links to other web resources. Covers many aspects of metalworking: architectural applications, design, furniture, sculpture, and jewelry.
Guild of Metalsmiths: Workshops, publications, and links of interest to artist-blacksmiths. From the Minnesota chapter of the Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America.
Tips from the Jeweler's Bench: A library of articles on studio techniques relating to jewelry and metalsmithing. Includes information on jewelry usenet groups and listservs. Use "Topics Browse" to browse articles by subject. The final article in the site is a bibliography of books for the metalsmith.
