Fume hood
The fume hood allows for the
use of materials which produce offensive fumes. It is equipped with a
powerful exhaust fan, and it works by evacuating the fumes out a flue.
Its glass doors open and close horizontally and are contained in a sash
which operates vertically. So the shape of the opening through which the
work is done can be varied in size and shape, depending on whether the
sash or the doors are opened. With the opening minimized, even solvents
as evil-smelling as xylene can be used without a trace of its vapors
being detectable by the operator.
