British and Irish Biographies
The Index to British and Irish Biographies, 1840-1940 is also on
microfiche, but using it is relatively straightforward. It is an alpabetical listing of every name in each of the sources, including both
individual personal names and family names. Individuals are identified by title,
if applicable, and by the date of the source in which they appear. Family
names are identified by locations. Each name is followed
by one or more reference numbers, identifying the fiche where the relevant
entries are found.
Sample Entry:
Barrett, [Major General] Arthur Arnold=
14.064 f.23 (1904)
This indicates that fiche series 14.064 (Debrett's Peerage), fiche 23,
has an entry on Barrett from 1904.
In the case of multiple entries for the same name, refer to the list of
sources for some idea as to whether the entry is likely to refer to the person
you seek. A Smith, John with an index entry beginning with 71 (The Green
Room Book) will be someone in theatre, with 85 (Our Living Painters
), a painter.
