In 1974, the South African Institute for Library and Information Sciences (now Library and Information Association of South Africa) established the Katrine Harries Award to recognize the work of a South African illustrator for a book published in the preceding two years. The illustrator must be a permanent South African resident. After 1983, the award was given biennially.
