In 1960, the South African Institute for Library and Information Sciences
created the C. P. Hoogenhout Award to recognize authors of books in
Afrikaans which were appropriate for children of ages 7 to 12 years. The
author and illustrator of the award winning book are honored by a gold
medal; the publisher receives a certificate. The prize is named after the
first author of a children's book in Afrikaans, C. P. Hoogenhout, a Dutch
teacher who published his book De geschiedenis von Josef voor Kinders
en huisouwens geschrijve door en vrind, in 1873 under the pseudonym,
Klaas Waarzegger. After 1982, the award was given biennially. It is now
administered by the Stigting vir Afrikaans (Foundation for Afrikaans) and
the Children's Literature Research Unit of the University of South Africa.
