Latin American Manuscripts in the Lilly Library

The list below provides access to collection level descriptions of the Latin American manuscripts held in the Lilly Library. They cover the colonial period to the 20th century and include correspondence, promissory notes, plans, royal cedulas, treaties, accounting books, archives and other items of an exceptional variety and richness. These collections vary in size from 1 item (British Guiana) to 6716 items (Peru). Collection level records provide brief, but enticing descriptions of the content of each collection; for example, "a copy of the first constitution of Bolivia, printed, with corrections in Sucre's hand" (Mutis Daza mss.), "a carta de poder general issued by Bernardino de Mella in 1548" (Chile), "an interesting letter from Luis Peru de Lacroix to Manuela Saenz, written the day before Bolivar's death," (Colombia), and "Francisco Maldonado's Explicatio Fidei Cakchiquel, an apparently unpublished work written in the Cakchikel language in 1615." (Guatemala).
