ALPHA XI CHAPTER HISTORY

In the Fall of 2001, Melvin Tejada transferred to Indiana University and was encountered with an intense culture shock that showed him a discouraged and faltering Latino community. After noticing the lack of unification among the Latino men on IU’s campus, he decided to set forth on a mission to bring together a group of men that would actively represent and support the Latino community at Indiana. After sharing thoughts with other men on campus, he was joined by Rogelio Mancillas, Ricardo Juarez and Johan Gamboa. Although there were several obstacles in their way, they vowed to remain strong and accomplish their desired goal. The research continued and it was obvious that the organization that would best fulfill the mission of these men at Indiana would be La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. After continuous contact with the National Council, these men began hosting events on their campus and participating in several community service projects together as an interest group. They quickly made a name for themselves and had the respect of the university and their peers. In the Fall of 2002, the group grew with the addition of Javier Moreno and Justo Rivera. This group was even more determined than before because they knew that their group was strong and determined enough to accomplish anything. After presentations to the Greek Councils and Indiana University, the school allowed the group to proceed on campus and National Council continued with the colonization at Indiana. It was this group of six men that became Hermanos of Lambda Upsilon Lambda and started the legacy of the Alpha Xi Chapter on April 26, 2003.
