Worship Services and Bible Study

Taizé services use prayer, scripture readings, silence, and chant to create a sacred space open to God's presence. Taizé is an ecumenical style of worship named for the religious community in Taizé, France. The simple style of chant, composed by the brothers of Taizé, becomes a form of meditation as each song is sung repeatedly.

Music is a major part of worship at the Center for University Ministry. Being an ecumenical, interdenominational community, we sing music of many different styles and time periods. We enjoy singing music from various cultures and in various languages, such as Spanish, Latin, German, Hebrew, and Swahili.

 Brown Bag Bible Study

During the academic year, this group meets here at the Center once a week during lunch.  You provide your own lunch; we provide readings, insightful dialogue, and fellowship.  New participants are encouraged to come check out this series!  Details about meeting times and readings will be posted here.

About our chapel...

Gathering Knowledge A Series of Paintings by Katherine Chilcote Paintings were installed on Sunday January 26, 2003 in the Chapel of the Center Please feel free to come and view the paintings almost any time during regular business hours and, of course, before and after worship. The following are selections from Katherine Chilcote's statemements about her creative process and her paintings: Over the past 6 months I have been working on a series of paintings that illustrate the lives and spiritual journeys of seven different women from the Old and New Testament. To understand what the journeys of Eve, Ruth and Naomi, Judith, Mary (mother of Christ), Mary Magdalene, and the Samaritan woman were like, I have been interviewing women I know today about their own spiritual journeys. The lives of so many women were recorded with only a few lines in the Bible, and so I have looked to the women of today, interviewing them about their own spiritual journeys in hope of discovering a new history. I have heard stories of strife and pain, and glory and pleasure where God has given life and challenges to so many women. I have heard faith journeys and spiritual sacrifices, stories of times when God was so near, filling bodies with endurance and love, and times when God seemed absent. In the lives of all the women I chose to paint, there is a moment of revelation and self- reflection, where an old life is left behind and a new life begins. It is at such turning points in my own life when I have found God to be most present. It is at times of frustration and solitude when only prayer and acceptance of God's presence have brought me belief and faith in what is to come. TOP
