Research Results:
All publicly available sources of information about nonprofit organizations exclude large segments of the nonprofit sector and contain very limited information. We have therefore developed several major surveys to provide important benchmark information about the Indiana nonprofit sector and allow for a more indepth understanding of the important contributions Indiana nonprofits make to the state and local communities.

- Nonprofit Capacity Assessment Survey: This survey, currently underway, is designed to develop a solid understanding of the extent and nature of capacity building needs faced by Indiana nonprofits and the utility of different types of assistance for addressing these needs. To assist Indiana grantmakers develop a common understanding of these issues, the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance (a membership association of grantmaking executives, staff and board members that seeks to promote legal, ethical, efficient and effective grantmaking) and Lumina Foundation for Education are partnering with the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs to undertake a nonprofit capacity assessment.
- 2002 Indiana Nonprofit Survey: This suvery, completed in 2002, was a joint effort by the Center on Philanthropy and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. It was designed to develop solid information on a broad array of topics about the more than 60,000 nonprofits of all types in the state of Indiana - charities, congregations, advocacy nonprofits and membership associations.
A broad-based Survey Advisory Board is working with the project team to create linkages to related or complementary efforts, identify key policy implications of the survey findings, and insure effective dissemination of results as they become available.
