Bologna Application Instructions
for students from Non-BCSP institutions

Spring 2009 Applications NOW AVAILABLE

Return to this site in January 2009 to access the Fall 2009 and 2009-2010 Academic Year Applications.

Applicants from Member and Associate Member BCSP institutions should contact your study abroad office for application instructions.

To apply for the program as an applicant from a Non-BCSP institution, submit the following:

  1. Application
  2. Two copies of personal essay
  3. Two letters of recommendation*
  4. One signed copy of the Agreement and Release Form
  5. Two copies of your transcript

  1. Online application: Available NOW
Prior applications will automatically be overridden by any applications subsequently submitted.

If you are ready to apply, click APPLY ONLINE.

Applications submitted for other periods will be discarded. For helpful hints regarding the application process, see our Top 10 Tips for Applying to Overseas Study.

  2. Two copies of personal essay:
Compose a well-written paragraph or essay in response to each question. Edit your responses with care so that you present yourself effectively to the selection committee. Write your name and the name of your program on the top.
    • Why are you applying to this program? In what specific ways will this program contribute to your overall academic and professional objectives?
    • Will this program lengthen your degree program at your institution? If so, explain why you feel it is academically relevant to do so.
    • Give evidence of your serious interest in the host country.
    • Life in another country involves significantly different living situations, academic environments and social customs. What experience and skills do you have that will help you cope with such differences?
    • What are your primary non-academic activities and interests?
    • What do you expect to be the most challenging aspects of studying abroad?
    • Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? Is there anything about your academic record or information in your application that you would like to explain further?

  3. Two letters of recommendation*: Arrange to have letters of recommendation sent to Overseas Study from two professors (preferred) or associate instructors who knows your work well, not from employers or friends. One letter should be from a professor or associate instructor of Italian.

Remind your references of the application deadline and the program for which you are applying. To verify whether your references have sent letters of recommendation to Overseas Study, contact your references, not Overseas Study.

Print out recommendation forms from the web.

  4. One copy of the Agreement and Release form signed by you, and if required, your parent or guardian. Print out form from the web.

If you don't already have it, to open this and other PDF files. If you are unable to access this file, contact Overseas Study overseas@indiana.edu or (812) 855-9304.

  5. Transcripts: Submit one official transcript plus one photocopy.

Dossiers are reviewed by screening committees.  The process includes a telephone interview; further instructions will be provided after the application deadline has passed.  Electronic notifications are sent to each applicant. Allow approximately 4 weeks for processing.

Only when all of the above materials have arrived in the Overseas Study Office will your application be complete. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the recommenders.

Initial prepayment of $500 due Oct. 27, 2008.

Apply for a passport right away; many participants will need to have passports in hand several months in advance of travel in order to secure required visa or residency permits.  See the passport information page.
