ISRAEL
Summer Archaeological Dig at Tel Beth Shemesh

TEL BETH SHEMESH
- Tel Beth Shemesh was an important city in the kingdom of Judah,
the kingdom established by David and Solomon according to the Bible.
Its inhabitants included Canaanites, Israelites and Philistines.
- Students learn about archaology and Israelite history by helping to excavate the
city and through evening lectures and weekend tours.
TENTATIVE DATES
PROGRAM ORGANIZATION
- 15 IU students
- Dig directed by Israeli archaeologists from Tel Aviv University
- Program director: Ayelet Weiss, Lecturer, IU Jewish Studies Program
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
- 3 IU credits in REL-R 300 (AH), Research in
Biblical Archaeology (or REL-R 511 for graduate students)
- Daily work at dig from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Afternoon pottery cleaning & analysis
- Evening lectures about ancient Israelite history and society
- Weekend trips to Negev, the Judean desert, the Beth Shean valley, and the Galilee included in program fee.

ELIGIBILITY
You may apply if you
- are a degree candidate at an accredited U.S. university who is
making normal academic progress,
- are in at least your second full-time semester of college,
- are able to engage in sustained physical activity in the heat,
- are able to attend requried pre-departure orientation meeting(s) in Bloomington in March or April 2005, and
- have approximately a 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA.
Knowledge of Hebrew not required.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria
are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures
of the Office of
Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose,
and match between program and applicant's academic needs. Students on
disciplinary probation during program period not eligible.
HOUSING
- Shared rooms and all meals at comfortable air-conditioned guest
house at nearby Kibbutz

- Fees paid to IU:
(tuition, room, meals, weekend trips to Galilee and Negev,
health insurance)

- International airfare $1,200-1,500
Initial prepayment of $500 due March 20.
