Mahlon
Powell (1842-1928). Donor of the Mahlon Powell Foundation bequest,
which for many years funded a distinguished series of lectures at Indiana
University (for a list to from 1936 to 1960, see Appendix
1 to Henry Veatch, Towards a History of the
Indiana University Philosophy in Bloomington) and later
the Mahlon Powell Professorship of Philosophy (held by Hector-Neri
Castañeda until his death in 1991), and which continues to support
a variety of Departmental activities. |
James
B. Nelson (1872-1961). Donor of the James B. Nelson bequest, which
funds faculty research accounts, graduate student travel and summer
fellowships, the James B. Nelson Dissertation Year Fellowship, the
annual Julia-Jean Nelson Rudd lecture, and many other benefits to the
Department. (See Newsletter,
Summer 1992.) |
Oscar
R. Ewing (1889–1980), graduate in philosophy from IU (1910).
Donor of the Oscar R. Ewing Endowment, which funds the Oscar R. Ewing
Professorship of Philosophy (held until his retirement in 2007 by J. Michael Dunn, before
that by Raymond Smullyan and, in a visiting capacity, by Nuel D. Belnap
and Saul Kripke), as well as many other departmental activities. (See
Newsletter, Winter 1988–89.) |
Elizabeth
Drummond and Nancy Seidel, in honor of their mother Dona Roberts Biddle
(1891-1991, pictured), graduate of IU (1929). Their generosity enables
the annual Dona Roberts Biddle Memorial Philosophy Scholarship. (See
Newsletter, Summer/Fall 1994.) |
Betty
Neal Hamilton († 1995), head secretary in the Department from
1962 to 1982, in whose name the Betty Neal Hamilton Memorial Fund for
Students has been established. The fund supports philosophy majors'
research, travel and scholarly awards. (See
Newsletter, Summer 1996.) |
   Nancy
and Clemens S. ("Bud") Moss (left). Nancy and Bud are both
graduates of IU, and Nancy was for eighteen years our Departmental Administrative
Assistant, retiring in 2001. (See
Newsletters, Summer 2001.) In honor of their fathers James
M. Fields (third from left), and Anthony J. Moss (right),
the former of whom attended IU and performed with the Singing Hoosiers
with
Hoagy
Carmichael,
Nancy
and Bud in 1998 established the James F. Fields and Anthony J. Moss Fellowship.
Once the fellowship is active, it will support a graduate student in
Philosophy concentrating in either ethics or history of philosophy. |
Peg
and Myles Brand. In their name the Myles and Peg Brand Graduate Fellowship
in Philosophy has been established, a gift of the University
and friends. The fellowship was first awarded in September, 2003. (See
Newsletter, Summer 2003.) |
