Rules concerning the Dissertation Chapter Exam

The Dissertation Chapter Exam consists of a long essay (about twenty-five pages long) on the dissertation topic, with an optional oral.

Notes: (a) A request by a student for an oral exam will be honored. (b) Normally the Dissertation Chapter Exam should be taken by the end of the fourth year of graduate study. (c) In any case, it should be taken within one year of passing the Qualifying Exam.

For Students Whose Prospectus Has Not Yet Been Approved

You need to gain approval of the Prospectus now, when you submit the Dissertation Chapter. You should provide with your Chapter the following:

  • "Nomination of Research Committee" form. The Administrative Assistant (Karen Loffland) will prepare this for you. Please provide her with the following: (i) the title (possibly tentative) of your dissertation; (ii) names of the members of your dissertation committee; and (iii) curriculum vitae of those members of your committee who are not on the graduate faculty.
  • One- or two- page abstract of your dissertation; you will need to submit this to the Graduate School with the "Nomination of Research Committee" form. The abstract has to be approved by your Dissertation (i.e., Research) Committee.
