TITLE: Defending Am I blue
AUTHOR(S): Broz, William J
SOURCE: Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy v 45 no5 Feb 2002.p. 340-50.
ABSTRACT: The writer describes how one community in the Midwest dealt with a censorship challenge. The challenge focused on a book about adolescent gay and lesbian experience, Am I Blue, Coming Out From the Silence, edited by Marion Dane Bauer. One parent claimed that the description of sexual activity on page 171 was inappropriate for middle school students. The school board held an open meeting to vote on the book. The writer also wrote a letter supporting the book to each board member because he wanted to focus on each school board member's vote and to avoid public forums that would likely fuel more religious uproar.
