AB: Considers how translations of indigenous folktales form a large proportion of South African children's books. Notes that at first those who published them were influenced by Social Darwinism, and later the folktales played a role in promoting the ideology of apartheid, but they were mainly the product of white paternalism. Notes that the folktales are now valued for sharing with all South African children indigenous culture which has vanished. (SG)

AB: Discusses issues in translating a literary work, especially problems posed by differences between two linguistic and cultural systems. Focuses on the practice of replacing "foreign" names with familiar ones (a practice still common in English and German translations). Argues that such changes show a lack of respect toward other cultures and deprive readers of the cultural diversity around them. (SR)

AB: Children's literature reflecting authentic multiethnic cultures can help young minds recognize the diversity of their families and communities. Books that allow children to see themselves in a positive role give them an opportunity to affirm their identities. Children and youth also need books that show the interaction of people of diverse cultures, their ways of encountering and solving conflicts, their ways of developing respect for each other, and their ways of creating solidarity. This guide contains more than 800 titles (single volume or series) in annotated bibliographies and creates an excellent starting point for building a multicultural book collection. It is organized by broad subject and then again by book type (picture books, fiction, nonfiction). The guide offers complete author and title indexes and more than 100 interdisciplinary application strategies ranging from reading aloud with follow-up discussions to social activism. Following a foreword, an introduction, and a how-to-use-this-book section, the guide is divided into these parts: (1) "Ties That Bind: Celebrating Life around the World"; (2) "Refugees and Homeless: Nomads of the World"; (3) "Navigating the Road to Literacy"; (4) "Books That Bring People Together"; and (5) "Multicultural Books in a Series." AB: Although people may be making progress toward global understanding and multicultural acceptance, there are still "miles to go." Only when an individual can view the members of other cultures as people of equal value will s/he be able to truly understand the perspectives of another. Unfortunately, classroom teachers are rarely equipped to teach a global curriculum. The best and most authentic materials by which to understand another culture are the books and stories written by authors of that culture for the children of that culture. This document presents an annotated bibliography of contemporary international children's literature that has been translated into English. The list contains 4 books from African literature, 8 from Asian literature, 1 from French Canadian literature, 7 from Central and South American literature, 4 from Eastern European literature, and 11 from European literature. The paper notes that to select appropriate literature, a teacher should consider the general accuracy of the story line, lack of stereotypes, use of appropriate language rather than derogatory slang, accurate perspective of the author, and story line and illustrations current in fact and interpretation with children's and adolescent literature. The approximately 700-item bibliography of children's literature that comprises appendix A of the paper has two perspectives: a compilation of authors from the Pacific Rim, and lists of coauthors from the Pacific Rim and other countries who have written books about the region. The approximately 225-item adolescent literature bibliography presented in appendix B lists books with themes or characters from the Pacific Rim area. (RS)

AB: Designed to help early childhood and elementary educators in Iowa integrate multicultural, nonsexist, and global (MNG) perspectives into the existing curriculum, this paper discusses issues surrounding their integration and provides two extensive bibliographies of curriculum resources. First, the paper reviews the definition and purposes of MNG education according to the Iowa Department of Education and describes the Department's MNG goals and themes as follows: that students understand themselves and others as cultural beings in a cultural context; that students recognize diversity in the country and the world; that students understand the effect of group membership on values, attitudes, and behaviors; that students understand the dynamics of discrimination, bias, prejudice, and stereotype; and that students demonstrate skills for effective social action. The themes include global interdependence; human resources, values, and culture; the global environment and natural resources; global peace and conflict management; and change and alternative futures. For each goal and theme, the paper provides a summary of a relevant book and a list of creative activities for integrating the book into the curriculum. Finally, the paper includes two bibliographies of MNG resources: a 48-item bibliography organized by the 10 goals and themes, and a 358-item bibliography of works on other cultures organized by country or culture of origin. AB: As more emphasis is placed on helping children gain a global perspective and understanding of the world, children's literature seems to be a natural vehicle for fostering that understanding. By studying the storyteller, educators can learn about literary traditions of communities, particularly traditions which reflect the use of stories. An explanation of West African minstrels' traditional use of the story can be shared with children and adapted for use in a classroom setting by hanging fishnets from a corner of the classroom where all sorts of items are hung. Children can choose an item which brings to mind a favorite story to share with the class. Children can become storytellers and take their stories from classroom to classroom in a way similar to the East Indian tradition, using story cloths to present stories through pictures. By identifying the original tradition and history of the storytelling technique, children learn about the value and use of stories from other cultures, and teachers can avoid the use of these traditions as merely another gimmick to capture children's attention.
