The
importance of secondary sound-spelling patterns
Search
for order.
Humans constantly search for order. It is a natural inclination to look
for patterns that will help us make sense of the world in which we live.
Language, for example works because it is orderly; it is predictable.
It has recurring sounds that our alphabet writing system portrays-also
in an orderly manner. As teachers we help children to see the order of
language as it is represented in print. The sound patterns in language
are represented with spelling patterns.
Besides
the basic patterns discussed in the previous module, there are numerous secondary
patterns. By teaching children some of these secondary sound-spellings, we
show them that they themselves can figure out the patterns and gradually learn
as many of these sound-spelling relationships as they need to read and understand
whatever they want. Those patterns range from the rather simple way an "r"
changes the sound of the preceding vowel (as in car) to the more esoteric
spelling of /k/ in unique (--que)."
