RESEARCH PROGRAM
Professor Lucaites's research concerns the general
relationship between rhetoric and social/political theory, and seeks to
contribute in particular to the critique and reconstruction of
liberal-democratic public culture in contemporary late-modern society. The
project currently has two related trajectories. The first emphasis focuses
on the role of photojournalism as a mode of "public art" that teaches us to
"see" and "to be seen" as citizens. The second trajectory focuses on the relationship
between race and U.S. social and political identity and attends to the ways
in which the concept of
"race" is constructed and articulates with the prevailing
ideological commitments of contemporary Anglo-American versions of
the liberal project (e.g., "equality," "property,"
"individualism," "merit," "public trust," etc.). His most recent work includes
the book No Caption
Needed: Photojournalism, Public Culture, and Liberal
Democracy (Chicago, 2007), co-authored with Robert Hariman which has
led to the development of a daily blog on photojournalism as a public art
titled nocaptionneeded.com. He is also a contributing editor at BagNEWSnotes.com.
