Associate Instructor Job Description

An associate instructor (AI) is a graduate student hired to teach credit courses in learning skills and to perform duties associated with the teaching of these courses.

Among the AI responsibilities are the following:

  • Full assistantships are 10-month assignments from August through May and require 18 hours per week. Per section assignments require 9 hours per week.
  • For full assistantships, instructors are assigned to teach four 8-week sections or two 16-week sections or equivalent each semester. In all courses there is emphasis on individualizing instruction and one-on-one conferences with students. Per section assignments involve teaching one class for one semester.
  • In addition to teaching responsibilities, instructors in full assistantships will be involved in outreach presentations, workshops, one-on-one student instruction via walk-in services, curriculum development, inservice training sessions, and professional seminars. Assignments beyond teaching are determined by calculation of specific teaching assignments as related to the distribution of the 18-hour/week.
  • All Student Academic Center staff members are required to participate in a one-week inservice training session prior to fall semester and a two-day session prior to spring semester.
  • Teaching staff attend a variety of meetings, i.e., inservice sessions, weekly staff meetings, curriculum sessions, student conferences. These meetings are a scheduled part of the 18 or 9-hour week.
  • AIs on full assistantship are often expected to teach more than one Student Academic Center course and assignments can vary from one semester to the next.
  • All AIs are required to obtain an e-mail account. These accounts are provided by the university without charge. The account will be a primary form of communication among SAC staff and with students.
  • All new instructors on full assistantships are required to enroll during their first fall semester of teaching in the 3 credit hour graduate course, EDUC L506: Providing Support in Post-Secondary Education. Full assistantship positions have a required minimum enrollment of 6 credit hours or the equivalent per semester.
  • Graduate workstudy positions are available (90% of graduate students are eligible); employment opportunities for AIs with approved workstudy far exceed those available to non-workstudy students. Please contact the office of Student Financial Assistance for application forms. Forms are due by the 1st of March. Call (812) 855-FAST. Forms must be submitted directly to the office of Student Financial Assistance.
