In the first year of the project, school teams were established at 11 schools in three districts in Indiana and Nebraska. In the first year of the project, the teams completed a number of activities resulting in the development of school plans.

Reviewed fact sheets and other materials regarding best practices in school violence prevention

Conducted a needs assessment of the school's activities and interventions for school safety

Surveyed teachers, parents, staff, and students regarding their perceptions regarding school violence and school climate
All of this information was used by each school to develop a Safe and Responsive Schools Plan, implemented and evaluated in 2000-2001. School plans for the Indiana sites are below (see University of Nebraska SRS website for description of Nebraska sites).

Generalization Sites
- In year three, 2001-2002, the project has expanded to generalization sites in both Indiana and Nebraska. In Indiana these sites are in an urban school district.
