Welcome Emory welcomes SEM on its 50th anniversary! Emory University is proud to welcome members of the Society for Ethnomusicology to Atlanta, Georgia, for its 50th anniversary conference. The conference will be held in the Sheraton Midtown Atlanta Hotel at Colony Square, November 16-20, 2005. Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of SEM in Atlanta, a bustling metropolis and the Southeast’s leading cultural and tourism center. Atlanta is the second fastest growing city in the US and the fastest in terms of its population size. The city’s history dates back to 1837 when it was founded at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line, as a site of a railroad terminus connecting Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Originally named Terminus, the city was later renamed Marthasville and came to be known as Atlanta in 1845. During the American Civil War in 1864, much of the city was destroyed in William T. Sherman’s infamous burning of Atlanta. Within four years, the city was rebuilt and named the state capital in 1868. Midtown Atlanta, where our conference will be held, was one of the earliest areas to be rebuilt: its intown neighborhood residence and modern buildings retain both historical charm and cosmopolitan vitality. In the heart of Midtown Atlanta, Sheraton Colony Square is linked to a complex with its own array of restaurants, cafes, and shops: museums, parks, and other interesting food establishments are all within convenient walking distance. The hotel is also easily accessible from the airport via the local transit system. Emory University is honored to host the 50th anniversary conference of the Society for Ethnomusicology in 2005. Come experience Atlanta’s southern charm and hospitality, and not to mention some of that good ‘ol southern cooking, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Society for Ethnomusicology in Atlanta. Robert A. Paul (Dean of Emory College and Charles Howard Candler Professor of Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Studies), Stephen Crist (Chair, Department of Music), and the Local Arrangements Committee at Emory look forward to personally greet you in Atlanta!
