Indiana University´s Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers fellowships and competitive stipends featuring excellent opportunities for research and teaching language and culture courses in our department. Additionally, graduate students may apply to teach specialized courses in the Honors College, the Global Village, and overseas through the Indiana University Honors Program. Graduate students receive thorough professional training in research and pedagogy. Funding for selected students is for two years toward the M.A., and five years for the Ph.D. (a total of 7 years of funding for those pursuing MA-Ph.D.). The graduate stipend for 2007-08 is $14,500 and includes a tuition scholarship. Additional fellowships are also offered to highly competitive candidates.
The Department makes several annual awards to continuing students:
- The J. M. Hill Prize for an Outstanding Graduate Student Paper recognizes the winner with a $250 cash award.
- The Agapito Rey Academic Year Fellowship provides a fellowship with release from teaching for one semester.
- The Agapito Rey Summer Dissertation Fellowship provides a stipend of $3,500 for summer research.
- The Merle E. Simmons Travel Fellowship for Research on Latin America Literature, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to a continuing graduate student in our department who is pursuing the PhD in Latin American literature and who will use the funds for a research trip to Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Spain or Portugal.
Doctoral students are eligible for travel funds each year, including the Bieder Fellowship, to present original research at national and international conferences.
In addition to these departmental awards, students from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese apply and receive many awards announced by the College of Arts and Sciences and the University Graduate School, such as the Dissertation Year Fellowship, the Wells Fellowship, and the John Edwards Fellowship. Foreign Language Area Study (FLAS) fellowships from CLACS and WEST are frequently won by students in the department.
