Civitas: An
International Civic Education Exchange Program
CIVITAS
International is a non-governmental organization for civic
education funded by the U.S. Department of Education and
directed by the Center for Civic Education. The organization's goals include
strengthening
effective education for informed citizenship in established
and emerging democracies around the world.
Individuals, international organizations, non-governmental,
and governmental organizations make up CIVITAS. The
program works to maintain a worldwide civic education
network utilizing all available resources and means of
communication, including computer networking, international
exchanges, and other means, to bring the knowledge, skills,
and experiences of civic educators to bear on the momentous
tasks that confront today's emerging and established
democracies
Indiana University's Center
for Social Studies and International Education has served as
a primary site partner for twelve years. The Eastern
European partners in the project are Estonia, Latvia, and
Lithuania. Among the project's goals are to have
educational leaders from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania
visit U.S. classrooms to observe how civic education is
taught, to confer with U.S. teachers about teaching and
learning in civic education, and to participate with U.S.
students in civics classrooms. In addition, U.S. teachers
are to have similar opportunities to observe, confer, and
participate in each of the Baltic countries.
