About Installation
The Stat/Math Center provides installation and upgrade services in the course of software sales.
Types of Installations
In general, there are two types of installations:
- Standalone Licensed Installations allow the software to be run on the machine regardless of network connectivity. This is appropriate for laptops, machines that will be taken to conferences, and other special circumstances. Not all software is available for standalone installation. A license file or license code is typically required.
- In network Licensed Installations, the software "checks out" a license from a license server on campus. Network connectivity is required to run the software. This is appropriate for office desktops, lab machines, and servers, and is the preferred type of installation.
Your Responsibilities
The Stat/Math Center must use its limited resources to best support the entire university system. With that in mind, we have outlined some of the responsibilities you should expect.
- We will only do installations on campus. If the machine is located off-campus, you must bring the machine to campus for installation.
- We typically will need "root" or "Administrator" access to the machine.
- We expect the machine to be reasonably configured and ready for a software installation; we will not configure/troubleshoot hardware or other software unrelated to the installation.
- We may need to speak with your Local Support Provider (LSP, or "whoever takes care of the computers") for additional support.
- Finally, you must confirm that your machine meets the minimum hardware and software requirements for the software you are licensing (see below).
You should verify that these responsibilities are accounted for before the installation appointment. If the verification made turns out to be in error, or the machine is not functioning, a $75.00 per hour additional charge will be assessed to cover the costs of the consultant's time.
Systems managers may also be asked to submit a monthly usage report for statistical and mathematical software installed on their network servers. The reports are required to ensure that we maintain all contractual and legal obligations to our vendors. The reports should include the name of the software package, the number of users accessing the package and the time that the package was accessed. These reports should be sent to smsale@indiana.edu on the first of each month.
Hardware and Software Requirements
The Stat/Math Center consultants have experience installing the software under a variety of operating systems, including Windows 2000, XP, and NT, MacOS, Linux, AIX, IRIX, Solaris, and DigitalUnix.
Below, the hardware and software requirements are listed for each package. Pay special attention to hard drive space.
Note: Stata, Statistica, and GAUSS are available as special order items. Contact the Stat/Math Center for details.
