Indiana University/New School Taijiquan Dr. Tao Ping Siang
Sifu Steve Benham Steve Benham began his study of martial arts in 1967 with Jujutsu master Dave Green. In 1973 He was introduced to Shotokan karate, and studied with Yutaka Yaguchi for five years. In 1979 He began to study T'ai chi with Laura Stone, and in December of 1980 attended his first William C.C. Chen workshop at Laura's studio in Bloomington In. In 1981 He spent one year in Boston and studied Aikido with William Gleason. After two years in Vail Colorado he returned to Indiana and resumed his study of T'ai chi. In 1988 He and James Todd opened the first T'ai chi school in Indianapolis. After one year of operation aikido was introduced into the school's program and Steve advanced to the rank of black belt. After leaving the t'ai chi school he continued to study aikido with George Bevins, who's aikido style was more in harmony with the flowing internal power of t'ai chi. Steve maintains his Tai'chi practice and teaches privately, and at workshops. His current focus is on the flow of internal energy, and the meditative aspect of T'ai chi.
