BA major in Theatre and Drama:

College of Arts and Sciences

Theatre and Drama is a department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The college not only offers more than fifty majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, and the Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, but it also provides the basis for an excellent liberal arts education through its general education offerings.

Admission

Incoming freshmen admitted to Indiana University can enter the University Division or possibly designate Theatre and Drama as their major through the Direct Admit program.

Theatre and Drama majors are provided with a departmental adviser to help with course selection, scheduling and monitoring of academic progress.

Degree Requirements

General

  • Students must complete a minimum of 122 credit hours to graduate.
  • Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.
  • Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours in courses at the 300-400 level for the B.A. degree.
  • Every degree candidate must complete at least 26 credit hours of the work of the senior year in residence on the Bloomington campus.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements

Fundamental Skills Requirements:

  • Writing
    • English Composition (3 credit hours)
    • Intensive Writing (3 credit hours)
  • Mathematics
    • One approved course (3 credit hours)
  • Foreign Language
    • Four-semester sequence (14 credit hours)

Distribution Requirements

  • Arts and Humanities (12 credit hours)
  • Natural and Mathematical Sciences (12-20 credit hours)
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences (12 credit hours)

Cultural Studies Requirements

  • Two courses in  cultural studies from selected areas  (6 credit hours)

Topics Course Requirement

  • One special Distribution area course

Major Concentration (25-42 credit hours)
Electives (7-61 credit hours)
Total Credit Hours:  122 minimum

Major in Theatre and Drama Requirements

Students must complete 33 credit hours:

  • Introduction to Theatre and Script Analysis courses plus an introductory course in each of the following areas:  acting, directing, theatrical production, costuming, stage lighting and 2 courses in the history of theatre and drama .
  • 6 credit hours in one of the four following areas of concentration:
    • Dramatic literature, theatre history, and dramatic theory
    • Acting, directing, movement, and voice and speech
    • Scenic design, stagecraft, lighting design, costume design, stage management, and sound design
    • Playwriting
  • 15 credit hours in junior- and senior-level courses.

Secondary Teacher Certification

Students seeking certification as teachers may combine their professional training in Theatre and Drama with teacher education. The departmental advisor has detailed information clarifying this program.  Students should also see the School of Education Undergraduate Bulletin for required courses in the teacher education program.
