Graduate Handbook

August 1, 2006

Dear Graduate Student,

Welcome!

Welcome to a year in which we fervently hope to engage and challenge your mind as well as nurture your artistic soul.

We extend a special welcome to the incoming graduate students.  The IU  Bloomington campus may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but you will find that our department functions as a comparatively small family unit within the larger campus community.  When (not if) you have questions and problems, please do not hesitate to ask assistance of those of us who have been around awhile.  We will gladly help you or direct you to someone who can.  To those who are returning—welcome back.  We hope that your summer was a good one.  We know it has been a busy and productive one for those of you who have remained with us for summer sessions, Brown County Playhouse, Midsummer Theatre Program, or the Premiere Musicals Workshop.

We are justifiably proud of the fact that our department consistently has been ranked among the top echelon of theatre programs in the nation.  The excellence of our faculty, staff, curriculum, production and other co-curricular programs is certainly a critical factor.  The key ingredient of our success, however, has always been our students.  We are confident that, during your time here, each of you will make your own unique contribution to that tradition of excellence.

The beginning of a new academic year is a bit like opening night.  Everyone onstage, backstage, and out front is filled with anticipation and a bit of healthy tension.  As
the curtain rises on the 2006-2007 year, the stage has been set for an outstanding production: challenging classes, an exciting and thought-provoking production season, and stimulating encounters with distinguished faculty and guest artists and scholars.  Our intention/motive/goal/victory is that this be a year of intellectual and artistic growth, intensive learning, and enriching experience for you. And along the way, we hope you’ll have lots of fun!

The house lights have dimmed, the audience is hushed, and…

Curtain going up!

Best Wishes for a rewarding year,

Marilyn Norris
