AUDITION AND CASTING:
Policies And Procedures for
Department Of Theatre And Drama Productions
1. Auditions for regular season Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center (LNTDC) productions in the Ruth N. Halls and Wells- Metz Theatres are open to all registered students of Indiana University Bloomington. With the exceptions of thesis roles for MFA actors, guest artists, and faculty, no role is precast.
2. Directors and other members of a production team will not ask actors to audition for their production. If after open auditions a director can not cast a role, that director may contact students to audition or to consider doing a role in that production.
3. If a director who is not yet auditioning knows s/he will want to consider using an actor who is auditioning for another director, s/he may talk to that director and discuss the actor’s casting. All MFA actors will be cast in at least one production a semester.
4. In LNTDC productions, three MFA acting students should be cast in each production, if possible.
5. MFA acting students will audition for all regular season LNTDC productions for which they are available.
6. While MFA acting students may express role preferences at the time of auditions, they must accept roles as cast. Audition schedule: show 1 alone; shows 2,3,4 Unified audition; show 5 done; shows 6,7,8 Unified auditions.
7. The Department of Theatre and Drama will continue its policy of non-traditional casting. By definition, “non-traditional casting” is the casting of talented and skilled ethnic, female, or disabled actors in roles where race, ethnicity, gender, or physical capability are not necessary to the characters’ or play’s development.
