John is the 1991 recipient of the Theatre Circle Award. At the University of Texas at Austin, John won the Morton Brown Scholarship and was inducted to the honorary fraternity of Phi Kappa Phi in spring 1992. While at Texas John worked as the assistant to the associate producer of the Performing Arts Center, where he served as project coordinator for the Robert Wilson Residency in which the world-renowned director conducted workshops for two upcoming productions.

John dedicated his directorial talents to new-play development and production. Before returning to Bloomington, he directed the successful production of Sailing Home to Tea, which won "Best of Fest" at the Frontera Fest (Hyde Park Theatre) festival of new plays in Austin, Texas. John served as Artistic Director of the Bloomington Playwrights Project from 1997-2000 where he directed and/or produced over 25 projects, some of which went on to successful productions in New York and beyond.
