Charles Railsback
Charles Railsback has been the undergraduate advisor for the Department of Theatre and Drama since 1995. He teaches Introduction to the Theatre and also serves as the department's primary contact for secondary teacher certification, having taught regularly the Methods for Teaching Speech and Theatre. Charles taught for seventeen years at Doane College where he headed the theatre program on the Associate Professor level. He founded the Doane Drama Conference for high schools where approximately 600 students and their teachers from as many as 30 Nebraska and neighboring states schools annually met to see a Doane production and participate in theatre workshops.
He also developed Doane Summer Theatre, a college-community organization which existed for 12 years under his leadership. He has had secondary teaching and directing experience as well. He was a founding director of the Peace Pipe Players, the Maquoketa, Iowa community theatre. He has directed over 80 productions of a wide range of classical, modern and childrens theatre dramas. While in Nebraska he served as president of the Nebraska Theatre Association. He served on advisory panels for both the Nebraska and South Dakota Arts Councils.
Currently he belongs to the American Society for Theatre Research. Earlier as an actor he performed major roles in four different university repertory theatre operations. All educational and teaching experiences, including the doctoral dissertation which focuses on the career of the leading professional theatre training educator of the twentieth century Michel Saint-Denis, join together in the work of theatre education.
